A Nice Visit

September 30, 2006 By: Andrew Category: General No Comments →

Sorry for the lack of updates. Between work and spending time with Angela, (my sister, just in case you didn’t know!) I haven’t had much time to write. I actually have written a couple posts that I haven’t been able to publish because of some formatting issues with Wordpress…not sure if anyone else has been fighting it…? But I shouldn’t have to edit HTML by hand just to format line breaks and paragraphs! And then even when I did that, sometimes it still tried to fight me. It’s only happened with a couple posts . Not sure why.

Anyway, we are out the door, so I will write more later. But we are having a nice visit, and she is set up and navigating like a pro, for the most part. No matter how much you prepare yourself, all the lights, signs, sounds, and people of Tokyo can be pretty overwhelming.

Ok…more later. I took just a couple pictures of the train ride to Narita Airport last Saturday (and a couple at Narita). They’re nothing special, but you can check them out on my photo page here, or on my Flickr page here

Today’s Photo: Harbin, China

September 19, 2006 By: Andrew Category: China, Flashbacks, General, Harbin, Today's Photo, Travel 2 Comments →

I went to Harbin, China on May 3, 2006, for my friend’s wedding.

What can I say about Harbin? I was really impressed. It has a great deal of Russian influence, as well as Korean.  The city and the people are very vibrant and interesting!

I took a night train from Beijing.  My time in Harbin was short, but I have many good memories.  If I ever get the chance, I would love to go back.

Saying Goodbye

September 18, 2006 By: Andrew Category: General 1 Comment →

On Saturday afternoons, I teach a wonderful group in Mitaka. I met them through my company originally: I taught them at an extension college course for seniors. The original class was pretty popular, so it was extended, and they even added a second course. But when the college did not renew the class, they found a community center nearby and I’ve been teaching them there ever since.

On Saturday, as I came out of the ticket gate, two of the students were waiting for me. It turns out that they were quitting the course. I don’t know why, but I think one of them is having a lot of trouble with her vision, and the other doesn’t have time anymore.

I remember when I started teaching this class, I had to use a Japanese book. The book was not set up for group conversation class. It was actually a self-study book, that jumped all over the place, in terms of material and difficulty level. But the title of the book was something like, “English Conversation for People over 60,” so that is what we used. Generally speaking, I am not supposed to use Japanese in class. In fact, many places, like my high school, require me to pretend that I can’t speak Japanese. It is pretty retarded that I can’t use Japanese outside of class, but that is part of the job sometimes. But I remember when I started teaching this group, there was actually a complaint that I didn’t use enough Japanese! So I always tried to teach and explain everything in both English and in Japanese. And eventually, they got used to English and I used less Japanese whenever possible.

This group is so wonderful. I really enjoy teaching them, so it will be a shame to say goodbye to two of the students. But they gave me a card and a present. They also left me presents for my sister, and they left food for the class! Obviously, they didn’t leave with bad feelings. At the station, they were very close to tears. It was a shock to me, so I didn’t know what to say. So we thanked each other and bowed.

Strange Days…

September 16, 2006 By: Andrew Category: General No Comments →

I had a strange week. It started with my last post. For some reason, which I still don’t understand, it messed up the format of my webpage. I tried to fiddle with the CSS layout, but I couldn’t figure it out. (My knowledge of CSS is…about like my knowledge of calculus!) :? You may have noticed my blue sidebar moved to the bottom of the page. The frustrating thing was that I didn’t have a chance to fix it for a couple days (more on that in a sec), and some of you saw the site for the first time like that!

Anyway, I finally just copied and pasted it and that worked…strange! But then the post was too long, so I wanted to insert a break, so you could click on the “show me more” link and expand it. But that broke it again!!! So I am going to leave it alone. Instead, if you want to get that long post out of the way after you have read it, you can take advantage of one of the features of this site, which I wrote about in the “About this site” link in the upper right hand corner of this page. Since you might have missed it, let me explain…

My Trip Home

September 11, 2006 By: Andrew Category: General No Comments →

新狭山 Shin Sayama

Today, I taught a student at Honda Motor Company, near Shin Sayama Station, in Saitama Prefecture (outside of Tokyo). Since the factory is in the country, and I only had to teach for two hours (and he had an important meeting to go to, so we quit a half hour early), I definitely spent more time traveling to/from the class than I did teaching it. But that happens a lot, actually. I also took my time going home. I walked around and had lunch and took pictures. Since I had the rest of the day off, I didn’t worry too much about time.
After I got back to the station, I looked out the window. I could just barely make out Mt. Fuji. I’d been there once before. Last winter, when I was there, I could see Mt. Fuji very clearly. It is easier to see it on clear winter mornings. This time, the sky was cloudy and it was hard to make out. If I hadn’t known where to look, I wouldn’t have seen it at all.

I had a nice conversation with my mom while I walked back to the station. While I was talking to her, I saw this restaurant. It wasn’t anything special, just a basic Chinese chain restaurant, but after I finished talking to her I had lunch here. It was inexpensive and pretty good. I had a set lunch with fried rice, gyoza (dumplings), soup, and kimchee (spicy, red Korean cabbage). I even had a beer…why not!

Finally, it was time to go. To get to this station, I had to use a private company line (Seibu). In Tokyo, there are MANY trains. Some trains are elevated. Some trains are subways. Many of the trains were built at least partially with government funds. There are also train lines built by private department store companies (”Come shop at our stores…here, we’ll even build you a train line!) I ride the Seibu line to go to my high school on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so I had a reusable ticket. But I took a picture of the ticket machines, anyway. There is a map to help you find your fare. After you buy your ticket, you proceed to the ticket gate, which is to the left of this picture, behind these people.

Here is another view from the station.

Here comes a train. I took my Canon A95 digicam today. I tried to take another picture of the train, but my camera was too slow. One thing I noticed is that my Nikon D70s is much faster! I am used to speeds more like 3 frames per second…not one frame every 3 seconds! :-) (Oh well.)

Oops! I just missed this train!

高田馬場 Takadanobaba

I meant to get off at an earlier stop, but i was on an express and I forgot. So I ended up going to a different station (Takadanobaba) than I expected. I teach a private class in Takadanobaba, so I usually go here once a week. It actually worked out better, because it didn’t add any time to my commute (ignoring the fact that I stopped to take pictures), and I was able to sit down and rest the whole way for a change!

In case you didn’t know, Japan is famous for its vending machines. They even have vending machines for batteries, magazines, and other items…but the most common is for drinks. They rarely have candy or chips in vending machines…

I’ve often wondered if these Shakey’s Pizza Shops were any good. They have a few in the more “foreigner friendly” areas–which I tend to avoid! ;-)

電車中 On the Train

Finally, it was time to go home. I took the Tozai Subway Line, because it goes directly to my home station, Ogikubo. About halfway to my station, it comes above ground and merges with the JR (Japan Railways) elevated train line.

Here is a pic from Asagaya, just one stop before mine.

When I got home, I took a nap for a couple hours. This morning, we had a really bad thunderstorm, and I woke up around 4:30am. We lost power for about 30 seconds. It was hard to sleep, so I was pretty tired.

Now, the day is over. It wasn’t an exciting day, but that is good. I had to travel out of the city to teach, which I could have been annoyed about. Instead, I turned it into a relaxing trip.

In case you haven’t seen this photo, I took it at the Great Wall, in China, on 4/30/2006. Click on the picture to go to my Flickr site…

Update: I forgot to mention: if you do click on the photo and go to my Flickr page, right above the picture, there is a link that says “All Sizes,” with a magnifying glass icon to the left of it.  Click on that, and you can see a larger version of this picture.

Busy, busy, busy!!!

September 07, 2006 By: Andrew Category: General 1 Comment →

I have so much to say, but I don’t seem to have enough time and energy to really express it all. Is it a waste of time to write “I am busy???” If so, then maybe I won’t be able to write anything…. ;-)

I am doing fine. Work’s been extra busy because everything is starting up again. The summer was not as hot as usual here, and it seems to be winding down a bit. Today, it was not very hot, but VERY humid…but it is starting to get cooler in the evenings already and it is getting dark early. Fall is always a relief…

More later. I am off to bed at a reasonable hour, for a change.

Here is a picture of me in front of Tiananmen Square last May. It’s not the best picture of me but FAR from the worst! Man, I am behind. I still haven’t really talked about my trip to China. (I did write some stuff, but I need to finish it and post it!) It was such an amazing place. The Great Wall, for example, was…incredible beyond words…

Stay tuned! Click on the picture to see more pics…

Three Years…

September 05, 2006 By: Andrew Category: Announcements No Comments →

Three Years.

三年間。

三个年。

Trés Años.

Hreetay Earsyay. (Pig Latin was my first foreign language, after all!)

Today, September 5th, is my 3-year anniversary in Japan. I am feeling a bit nostalgic. I have a lot I would like to say, but I am tired. So I will write about this more later.

By the way, I’ve uploaded a ton of pictures, but I haven’t got most of them all tagged and sorted into sets yet. You can view them on this site, by clicking on the “photos” page (”Recent Photos”), or you can look at them on my Flickr homepage, which I highly recommend. It’s under heavy construction, so keep checking back!

Check it out:

P.S.: My last post was in Japanese. I don’t know why. I don’t expect too many people to read it. I guess it was just for me, for fun. Maybe it seems strange (or self-indulgent) to use Chinese and Japanese on my website and with my pictures, but it is a big part of who I am, and what I am interested in. I think even if you can’t understand them, characters are beautiful. And if you can understand them, you KNOW they are incredible. They hold thousands of years of culture, knowledge and tradition in each stroke. (Besides, it’s my website, so there!) :P

Anyway, in my last post, I just said that I have been in Japan for three years, and I have basically gotten used to living here, but there are still some things that I am not used to. Unfortunately, I still can’t speak Japanese very well, and I don’t really understand Japanese culture and the Japanese way of thinking. I need to study harder and keep learning.

There is so much to learn, and so little time! At least I am not bored!!!

Another freebie day off!

September 03, 2006 By: Andrew Category: General No Comments →

The last post was, of course, done for effect. Even when things go crazy, i try to just laugh it off and keep a good attitude. And yes, I do get frustrated. But I get over it.

Things have actually been pretty good, despite some minor annoyances and inconveniences. I won’t go into those now. On the plus side, I have another freebie day off tomorrow (Monday). Like last Monday, it is an unpaid (thus, unofficial) day off. That is a good thing, because I have plenty of hours already and they aren’t forcing me to use my precious paid days off to cover it. This is something new, and probably because I bend over backwards to help my company so much, I guess. (Or maybe just a change in policy).

Basically, I am supposed to work 23 hours a week for my contract. (I usually work more than that for my company; plus, with breaks between classes and travel, it is a full schedule, trust me. Add my private lessons to that, and I’m busy!) If I work more than that, I get paid those hours on an hourly rate. If I work less, I still get paid, but I have to make up those hours later, by working overtime and not getting paid.

Unlike some teachers, I rarely go below hours anyway. As I said before, I was shocked I had that short vacation off this year, because the last couple years, I didn’t get one. I always thought it was dumb that all of my regular company, school, and community center classes were closed the same week in August, but they didn’t just give me a vacation. Instead, I would end up being really short on hours and having to work a lot to make it up. This year, that didn’t happen. Plus, I have had two unofficial days off.

The bad news is that I have a ton of essays to correct. I had to give my college students at Toho Music College an essay assignment over the summer, because they missed about five weeks of classes. The school year started in April, but the previous teacher had to go back to the U.S. in May or June. So I am taking over the class until the end of the year.

I canceled all my private lessons this afternoon, so I could work on them. I need to get them done. Hopefully, I can finish all or most of them today, and enjoy tomorrow. I have a lot of things I want to write here, but I might not have time for a couple days…
