Just Added: A Contact Form

February 27, 2007 By: Andrew Category: Announcements, General No Comments →

Here’s another thing thing I have been meaning to do for a long time…Under my header image, on the right hand side, is a contact form.  You can use this form to send me a private email.

Please note that this is not the same as thing as making a comment on one of my posts.  After every post, you can choose to leave a comment, which is visible to everyone.  But this contact form sends a private message directly to my email.

To use it, just fill in the required forms, and send it.  The last field is a simple math equation, which will help protect me from automated spam…

I’ve Added a Sitemap

February 27, 2007 By: Andrew Category: Announcements, General No Comments →

I want to write about the cancer lecture I attended last night (Sunday), but right now it is too late, and I am too tired. I have to get up early to go to my high school. Tomorrow is my final day for this year (maybe forever…?) It will be a big test day.

In the meantime, I have added a Sitemap to this site. You can see it below the header, all the way to the right. In addition to the improvements you can see, like the sitemap and the new Flickr badge on the sidebar (look to the right!) I have also been making some improvement on this site on the back end. I have so many ideas for this blog, but right now, I have to get some rest.

I Ate the Evidence!

February 25, 2007 By: Andrew Category: Announcements, General, Only in Japan, Uncategorized No Comments →

I recently posted about the new White Peach (白桃) Kit Kats on sale for a limited time in Japan. Well, I had one today. And the verdict is in…

They’re good!

They have a chocolate coating, with a light peach flavor on the inside. It might sound weird, but they were actually pretty good. But I think the cherry blossom ones are better. Hey, Kit Kat: BRING BACK THE GREEN TEA KIT KATS! (Please……)

I wanted to take a picture to post for this entry, but unfortunately, I ate the evidence. I guess I’ll have to go back and get another one. What a shame!

BTW…

Look for my long-promised face-lift for this site, as well as more pictures in the next few days!

White Peach Kit Kats

February 22, 2007 By: Andrew Category: General, Only in Japan No Comments →

The last couple days have been hectic.  I had to make tests for my high school.  The tests will be next Tuesday, but at least I finally submitted them.  Now, I need some sleep.  But I wanted to let you know that a new Kit Kat flavor has been released in Japan: “White Peach.”  I haven’t tried it yet…

As most of you know, Kit Kat releases many unique flavors in Japan.  One of the most popular ones in my family is strawberry.  I personally love Maccha (Green Tea), but they haven’t had that one for two years.

Like a lot of foods in Japan (and tea and rice, for that matter), many of these flavors are seasonal.  You have to grab them when they are out, or you will miss out.  There are several other flavors out right now, including Sakura (cherry blossom) and Azuki (Sweet red bean).

I’ll write more about this later.  If any of you are interested in a particular flavor, let me know.

(Note: Ok, wow..this is way old, but I’m going to post it anyway. I took this quiz during the holidays, and I never posted it. As they say, better late than never! I’m learning to live with the fact that, according to this test, I am more like Catwoman and Supergirl than Batman!) :?

I normally don’t bother with online quizzes, but this one tells you which superhero you are. I keep telling everyone I am a genius…now I have scientific proof!

A New Convenience Store Opens in Ogikubo!

February 19, 2007 By: Andrew Category: General No Comments →

Now, there are three convenience stores within about a two-block area of my neighborhood! The third one, Sunkus, opened today, just a block from 7-11 and Lawson’s.

As I have mentioned before, convenience stores in Japan rule. This one is also nice. It is like a small grocery store. They were giving out gifts in front of the store this morning, but I didn’t have time to stop.

Gmail for the Masses!

February 18, 2007 By: Andrew Category: General No Comments →

(Note: I wrote this on 2/15, but I had to save it as a draft. I couldn’t publish it until now.)

It’s the end of an era. Until today Valentine’s Day, Google’s Gmail service was available only by invitation. The feeding frenzy has long since cooled from the days when people paid $25-$150 or more (!) for an invite on ebay. And who can forget all the forums and discussing groups filled with people begging for an invitation?

Here is the official Google Blog entry. If you really want to waste time, check out the cheesy (but fun) four-part “Gmail Theater: Why Use Gmail?” series here. It’s what happens when geeks put on a paper puppet show and post it to YouTube. They have a sense of humor, anyway.

Giri Choco

February 14, 2007 By: Andrew Category: General, Only in Japan 2 Comments →

Yes, another Velentine’s Day…which means I got more “giri choco” from some of my students.

What is giri choco, you ask? Well, “giri” means “obligation” and “choco” is the Japanese abbreviation for “chocolate.” (obligation chocolate..get it? there are also obligatory drinking parties and other ways they take the fun out of things!)

Basically, they have a weird way of celebrating Valentine’s Day. On Valentine’s Day, women give men chocolate. And if, as a man, you are a boss or a teacher, your co-workers and/or students will give you chocolate (out of obligation).

Then, one month later, March 14th, is “White Day.” That is the day when men may or may not give chocolate back to women. I still don’t quite get the point…I’ve heard men only give chocolate back if they like the women..but then I have also heard that if a man is a high-level boss, and his subordinates give him chocolate, he has to give a much more expensive gift back. I’m sorry to say I don’t know. (Well, actually, I’m not really all that interested. Especially since no one can give me a concise explanation, and I am not motivated to go research it.)

At any rate, I got a few boxes of Belgian chocolate. I also got some French chocolate (though it was made in Germany.) As most of you probably know, Japanese make really good chocolate.

Here’s wishing you a Happy Valentine’s Day. Hope you get a lot of great chocolate, like I did!

Out of Hibernation

February 13, 2007 By: Andrew Category: General No Comments →

Ok, I am sorry that I haven’t posted anything since New Year’s. Actually, I have written a few posts, but embarrassingly enough, I accidentally lost them. I will spare you the technical explanation, but let’s just say it is frustrating to carelessly lose things you spent time writing.

What did I write about? Well, I just wanted to say that I enjoyed my trip back to the USA. Thank you to everyone in my family, who made my visit so enjoyable. It was very relaxing, and it gave me a lot of time to think. To be honest, it was hard to come back and go to work, but I still have more to do here. Ever since I came back, I have been really thinking a lot about my goals for this year.

I generally don’t make New Year’s Resolutions. Instead, I just set a goal whenever I feel it necessary. But this year, I have decided to be more “self-centered.” (Notice, I didn’t say “selfish.”) In other words, I want to focus more on improving myself and building for my future. Of course, I usually try to focus on these things, but this year, I am especially looking at how I can use my time, energy, money, and other resources more effectively.

Since I came back, I have spent a lot of time thinking. I have been thinking about my job, my education, my short-term and long-term goals, etc. While I was in the US, I bought several books about time management and investmenting. These are two areas that I have been focusing more on recently, and they are top priorities for this year.

Every day, I am moving toward a new future. Looking back, I can see times when I made great progress, as well as times when I grew complacent, and lost ground. But all of these experiences are useful and instructive. Last year was a year of travel and experimentation. I began and ended the year in the US. I went to China three times (twice to Mainland China, and once to Hong Kong). I also traveled in Japan (Hiroshima, Himeji Castle, and Kyoto). What a great year!

I believe this year will be a very productive and interesting one. I might not travel as much, because I am focusing more on learning new skills and preparing for a new stage in my life. This year will be a year of great change for me. It may or may not be evident to others, but in my mind, I have already begun to make significant changes. (I’m not trying to be vague here, but I can’t really articulate anything yet. But stay tuned…)

So I apologize for the lack of posts. I have been busy, and I was also trying to get over a nasty cold. But to be honest, I really just didn’t feel like writing. I have been reading, thinking, and taking some time for myself. You might think it selfish of me to not post, but I prefer to call it “self-centered.” I wanted to share my thoughts with you, but first I had to take some time for myself. So much of my time has been devoted to helping my company, and helping my students reach their goals. This year, I want to put more emphasis on what I want. It’s my time.

It’s good to be back. Thank you for your patience.
