Monorails

Monorails are not toys. They are a very effective form of transportation. Too bad more cities don’t build them. This is the Tama Monorail. I took this at Tamagawajosui Station (玉川上水駅), near the high school where I teach a couple days a week.

By the way, I have Part Two of my SmugMug vs. Flickr series just about done, but I want to add a couple things. In the meantime, let’s do a little comparison. This is the same picture, embedded from Flickr (Top), and Smugmug (bottom). The galleries they are in are identical. It’s the same picture, but it looks like the SmugMug version is a bit brighter, at least on my monitor.. At any rate, you can click on either picture to go the gallery. Which do you like better? :)

How interesting. Flickr or Smugmug shouldn’t affect the image, but clearly it does… how weird…

Actually, I think that SmugMug allows you to customize the amount of sharpening applied to your photos with a Power User or Pro Account, but doesn’t add sharpening to photos on a Basic Account. (I just have the basic for now.) Flickr probably adds a bit of sharpening and/or contrasts to the photos. It looks like the Flickr one has a bit more contrast, which may explain why it appears darker.

Even more interesting: I just compared both photos to my original jpeg (I didn’t download them; I mean from the websites), and it seems like the SmugMug is a bit closer to the original, but neither are quite as saturated (I slightly oversaturated the photo, for effect). But SmugMug has a “Change Color Effect” feature, which allows you to instantly change the look of your photo (for example: sepia, tanning salon, black and white, etc.) the “Auto Color Corrected” looks like the original.

At any rate, both versions look ok to me. I was just a bit surprised. What matters more is the ease of use and presentation for my friends and family. :)
